Songkran activities are rich with symbolic traditions. Mornings begin with merit-making, usually by visiting local temples and offering food to Buddhist monks. Songkran, or Thai New Year, is also known as the Thai Water Festival — making April perfect timing for this festival since it’s the hottest time of the year. Since Songkran is the Water Festival, water poured on Buddha statues and senior monks, as well as the young and elderly, is a traditional ritual on this holiday. It represents purification and the washing away of one’s sins and bad luck.

Songkran 2021

Songkran 2021 in Hua Hin is guaranteed to be a spectacular and fun-filled celebration this April 13 – 15. The point of the festival is to show respect to elders, which is done by sprinkling water over their hands. Although this tradition is still widely practiced all over Thailand, the festival has evolved somewhat and you’ll find that everywhere turns into an all-out water fight.

Songkran in Thailand means getting soaked. The only people immune to a soaking are monks and babies – you will certainly not be spared, so if you don’t want to get wet, stay at stylish (and dry!) SO Sofitel Hua Hin where you can limit your water exposure to the pool or beach. Songkran can be celebrated for a number of days – usually three – but you’ll find that the water throwing in Hua Hin is mostly restricted to one, the 13th of April. Don’t assume that you won’t be ambushed on the 14th and 15th, but you should be safe in the center of town.

The first day of Songkran is usually when families come together for religious ceremonies. The second day is set aside for a visit to a temple to cleanse Buddha statues and pray. And all 3 days are devoted to the party, holiday and fun mode – be ready for, water fights, resort activities, buffet dinners, kids club activities, foam parties, flower print shirts, and beer.

Songkran 2021 in Hua Hin will have a celebratory atmosphere and you’ll get a deeper insight into Thai culture and their way of celebrating New Year in Thailand. In Hua Hin, the town’s New Year theme is about paying gratitude to elders and celebrating Thai culture. In addition to events at local temples, there will be flower parades, a Songkran procession and playful water fights on some of the main streets. All done while wearing the famed and vividly colorful flower-print shirts.
