Thailand is a land filled with culture and history, one such touch of history, with a western influence, is Mrigadayavan Palace. This Golden Teak mansion built by King Rama VI is north of Hua Hin, close to SO Sofitel Hua Hin between Cha-Am and Hua Hin.
Pastel colors give Mrigadayavan Palace its unique atmosphere. Creamy gold pillars support the elevated walkway that connects the teak buildings. Aqua-blue window shutters match the nearby ocean. Bonsai frangipanis weave along a path leading to a statue of the king. A tearoom offers daily high tea where you can sit on wicker chairs and look out over the lawns that roll into the sand and then the sea.
Mrigadayavan Palace is a former residence of His Majesty King Vajiravudh, or Rama VI, who ruled Siam from 1910 to 1925. King Vajiravudh visited the palace twice during his reign, first in the summer of 1924 when he stayed for three months, and then for two months in the summer of 1925, after which he died. It’s easiest to get here with private transport but you can also arrange transport from SO Sofitel Hua Hin or catch a Hua Hin–Cha-am bus.
Mrigadayavan Palace includes three groups of buildings with 16 smaller buildings, connected to each other by a long covered wooden corridor. Twenty-two staircases allow access to the private quarters. The palace is aligned parallel to the sea with the long corridor allowing sea breezes during the day and mountain breeze at night.
The palace is one of the longest teak buildings in the world, designed by the King, who brought in an Italian architect to complete the design and maximize air circulation to make the most of the seaside location and help with the King’s rheumatoid arthritis. King Vajiravudh was frugal with the construction of Mrigadayavan Palace, wanting this seaside palace to be a humble royal residence. The palace design is simple, yet elegant, in harmony with the tropical seaside climate.
