Golf in Hua Hin has been burnishing its reputation among golfers with outstanding Hua Hin Golf Courses since 1924. Developed as a holiday destination for royalty and elites in 1920, Hua Hin has attracted travelers with its unique culture, delicious food, sandy beaches, and world-class Hua Hin golf courses ever since. As the birthplace of Thai golfing, golf in Hua Hin today boasts an extensive range of superb courses, and the luxurious beachside resort of SO Sofitel Hua Hin, ideally situated near these legendary golf courses, is proud to share in this rich Hua Hin heritage. For a purview of the exceptional golf in Hua Hin awaiting you while enjoying the sumptuous comforts at SO Sofitel Hua Hin, here’s a run-down of some of the finest nearby golf clubs.
Banyan Golf Club, 53 minutes south of the hotel, opened just in 2008 on the site of a former pineapple plantation and thus boasts lots of elevated greens, sloping fairways, meandering creeks, and well-placed bunkers. Relic pineapple groves in some spots can make for some challenging shots off the fairways. All this makes it one of the most natural courses in Hua Hin, including Banyan trees and natural rock formations integrated into this well-designed course. Beautiful views of the mountains to the west and ocean views to the east bless Banyan Golf Club with one of the best layouts in Hua Hin.
Golf legend Jack Nicklaus designed Springfield Royal Country Club, which can assure you that this Hua Hin golf course is well worth a play. Mr. Nicklaus designed the original 18 holes in 1993, and an additional 9 holes were added in 2005. This championship course has hosted the Thailand Open and several other championships, so ‘challenging’ is the watchword at Springfield Royal Country Club. Accuracy is paramount on every hole to avoid the large bunkers, ample water hazards and difficult roughs with mature trees. The club’s founders put an emphasis on preserving wildlife on the property, so as a result, you can spot more than 100 species of birds around the golf course. The course is just 30 minutes from SO Sofitel on Rt. 37.
Opened in 1924, Royal Hua Hin Golf Course was the first golf course in The Kingdom of Thailand, and is thus steeped in history; plus, the scenery is outstanding, with particularly impressive views of the Gulf of Thailand and Hua Hin town on the back nine. Its 18 holes follow somewhat hilly terrain around magnificent limestone cliffs rising beside the fairways, many lined with old-growth trees to shade those who have wandered off the fairways. Mischievous monkeys sometimes dart from the bushes to steal golf balls, adding an unusual challenge to your game.
Royal Hua Hin Golf Course’s Olde-World charm harkens one back to the Thai Royalty and British expatriates playing this very same course almost a century ago, and it’s only 36 minutes south down the coast from the hotel.
Black Mountain Golf Club is one of the best designed and well-maintained Hua Hin golf courses you’ll ever play, with stunning mountain scenery, immaculately manicured greens and top-notch services. Golf Digest has ranked it among the best 100 golf courses in the world outside the US, and it has hosted several Asian PGA tournaments. Black Mountain Golf Club’s 27-hole resort comprises three different courses nestled in undulating foothills 12 kilometers west of Hua Hin and 40 minutes from SO Sofitel. Many natural creeks border crescent-shaped black granite mountains carpeted with lush vegetation, and these natural rocks and streams are deftly incorporated into the layout of this challenging course.
Palm Hills Golf Resort & Country Club was the first international standard course to offer golf in Hua Hin back in 1992. It’s blessed with wide fairways, forests, reasonable water hazards, mountain horizons, placid lakes, and sea views, with many colorful frangipani and bougainvillea trees dotting the links. Palm Hills Golf Resort & Country Club is an excellent choice for golfers of all skill levels and can be reached in 32 minutes from SO Sofitel Hua Hin, just 25 km south on Route 4.
Majestic Creek & Country Club is set on a large tract of land 48 minutes from SO Sofitel, with lakes, forests, and mountains, making it one of the favorite golf courses with the locals. The layout is criss-crossed by natural streams, which add to the challenge and beauty of the course. It’s suitable for golfers of all levels, but pros will enjoy the difficult and large water hazards. In its 27 holes, the course features undulating fairways lined with palm trees, giving it a very tropical feel. Majestic Creek & Country Club boasts Thailand’s longest Par 5 at 772 yards. All this space gives the feeling of exclusivity on the course, and players on adjacent fairways are rarely seen.
Milford Golf Club lies in a spectacular location about 40 minutes south of Hua Hin or 52 minutes from SO Sofitel. It’s nestled in the valley of a chain of mountains directly adjoining the coastline with fantastic sea views. The course has a feel of a ‘links’ due to its seaside location and is surrounded on three sides by forested hills. The natural lie of the land makes for a large angle of elevation on most of the holes, which adds to the interest and challenge of the course. Milford Golf Club (Hua Hin Seoul Country Club) can be difficult, and even some of the local professionals have trouble matching par here.
